1. What type of services do private investigators provide?
There are many types of investigations that private investigators offer. Insurance companies often hire investigators to look into suspicious workers compensation claims. Corporations have interest in internal thefts and the activities of their employees. Law firms hire investigators to gather information on civil cases, defense cases and delivering subpoenas. Investigators also locate persons and conduct pre-employment screening and background checks.
The majority of investigative work is out in the field conducting interviews and doing surveillance. Investigators conduct background checks, computer searches, courthouse record retrievals and making phone calls to collect information. The investigation will provide detailed reports and the investigator may be asked to testify in court to the results of an investigations.
2. What types of activities are licensed, professional investigators not allowed to do?
Private investigators do have access to information the general public cannot obtain. Even so, investigators must obey the same basic laws that ordinary citizens are subject to follow. Investigators cannot present themselves as law enforcement officers or as employees of a law enforcement agency. Investigators cannot wire tap (record or listen to private conversations using electronic equipment). Investigators cannot obtain cell phone records or financial information using a pre-text (concealing one’s true intent by deception)
3. How do private investigators charge for their services?
Investigators usually charge by the hour and hourly rates can vary depending on the situation. Most investigators will require a retainer fee before starting a case. Investigators will also require at least a minimum of 4 hours of work.
4. Does a private investigator need a license to perform investigations?
Most states do require a private investigative company to be licensed. In Texas, investigative companies are licensed by the Texas Department of Public Safety Private Security Bureau. A public database allows anyone to determine the status of
license and registration for private investigators and
investigation companies
5. What is the purpose of a background check?
- Pre-employment checks: It is estimated that 10% to 35% of job applicants misrepresent themselves about education and their qualifications.
- Employee checks: You as a business owner can be liable if an employee with a criminal record commits a crime at your business or uses your business to commit crimes.
- Criminal background checks: It is estimated that 10% of the population has a criminal record. Knowing this information can save your business, your personal safety and the persons involved in your day to day life from crime and fraud.
- Renters check: A check of the person or persons you are going to allow to live on your property, can let you know if they are reliable and honest enough to take care of your property.
- Caregiver checks: A check of the person you are going to rely on to take good care of your child or elderly loved one can help prevent horrible consequences.
6. Will surveillance always produce the results a person or
business seeks? "Can a time limit be put on how long a case will take?"
No, there are no time limits for a case. Many times, a case can take
longer than expected, but solving the case is our first priority.
Therefore, not having time limits is better for our client. In
addition, we regularly update the client on what costs we have
acquired at each step. Clients will then decide if they want to
continue with the case further.
